With regard to Ure $258.51 property tax bill- It is too late to throw camo netting over the outbuildings, I suppose. Maybe you could get a smaller trailer, or a tiny home. Hopefully your ag income is paying for the property tax. Mine has paid for it ever since I got the old folks discount. I suspect my taxes may drop a few bucks in 2026 with the new tax breaks we voted for this year. Your taxes should drop a little as well. I think we are looking at net increase in exemptions of $100K, though those exemptions only apply to selected components of the property tax bill. I should see at least a $7 net reduction.
In reality, I can, and have lived a lot cheaper than I do now at this location. The biggest expenses are the automobile and insurance. And I can reduce the automobile expenses significantly, if need be, by simply reducing the driving to minimum essential. The insurance is a little harder to do. I don’t see my health increasing increasing much in 2026. I took a big hit on my home insurance a couple years back, and trimmed the coverage a bit already. Car insurance in Texas is sky high. No one wants to give me a good deal.
I am slowly putting together an electric bicycle which can reduce my need for four wheels. Calling it a car replacement would be a stretch, but in a pinch, it will fill a role close to that. Not that pinched right now.
I pared back my comm expenses with a meat axe, and I am happy with the services I have now. My total expenses are a hair under $100 a month, depending on which Amazon channels I am streaming. I already spend too much time online, and watching streaming and off-air TV.
Utilities here are high, but nothing compared to the stories I hear on this forum. I don’t have much room for improvement, without large capital investments with questionable ROI. If I had it to do over, I would have done the roof and the HVAC differently, with a lower monthly impact. Still on the lookout for components with a favorable price tag.
Next year may be the year to upgrade the main computer. The processor and video cards which are going to be available next Christmas will be 8x what I am using right now at home. I figured when 100K Passmark low power processors became available, it would be time to upgrade. Looks like they will be here in the spring. I’ve had a good run with this machine.
Two biggest deals here have been self-insuring the mobile home – the fire part was ~$2,000 alone – we kept the rest including liabilities etc. The next biog savings was paying the extra to get groceries delivered. Nice to click, click and groceries show up? But I hear you – a lot of retirement planners selll you funds all day long but don’t really explain how to skin the cat when you do actually get older
