The early futures today were…what’s the word?  Confused about where to head next.

Seasonality: One possibility is that the rally will be back from break in a minute and will stampede higher toward Labor Day – a traditional “late summer high” pattern.

Fundamentals:  Somewhat stable, which could telegraph sideways for a while.  This morning, the NFIB Small Biz confidence report was stable.

” The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index remained steady in June, edging down 0.2 of a point to 98.6, slightly above the 51-year average of 98. A substantial increase in respondents reporting excess inventories contributed the most to the decline in the index. The Uncertainty Index decreased by five points from May to 89. Nineteen percent of small business owners reported taxes as their single most important problem, up one point from May and ranking as the top problem again. The last time taxes reached 19 percent was in July 2021. “

Questions Grow, however: Trump tariff tirades aside, there’s a growing sense of dis-ease despite this being Prime Day over at Amazon.  Trump announces new tariffs of up to 40% on a growing number of countries, begins one take on it.

We’re a week out from a Fed decision on rates.  In-house, we’re leaning into having coffee and relaxing for a while.  No point running to the guillotine, if you follow.  A Fed Minutes report tomorrow may help clarify. And certainly market action, tariffs, and random world events will come into play.

Pieces Moving on the Board

The bad historical rhymes over Gaza continue to build.  The genuine cynic might see a rhyme with Chamberlain appeasement, as Netanyahu nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize as the two meet at White House.

If you listen closely, though, a rhyme on the dangers of “getting on the trains” looms in the distance as Netanyahu and Trump on the ‘free choice’ relocation of Palestinians: ‘We’re getting close to finding several countries’.  Meanwhile there’s some Israeli drift into southern Brazil, and still rumors of a Polish resettlement LZ should Arab states attack Israel this fall.

Meanwhile, on another war front, our consigliere’s “Battle of Britain” (…as in: out of planes, fuel, and time) is also on the White House agenda: US to send more weapons to Ukraine: Trump.

Internal Problems:  Media reports out of the Southland Monday were tossing gasoline on already inflamed feelings about illegal immigration.  Bystanders confront federal immigration agents as they descend on MacArthur Park in Westlake area of Los Angeles.  Not a big thing (though the hysteria of some media shills is apparent – depending on your taste in sites – but still an indicator that stories like Exclusive: Operation Excalibur in Los Angeles Was Show of Force will be around for months to come.

Popularity contest results: Windows 11 is finally more popular than Windows 10.  Which means, now that the product is usable and stable, it must mean a Windows 12 is prepping for rollout.  Pinging the AI stack:

Years back, we made a moral and ethical decision NOT to get deep into social media.

Because, as explained in a Peoplenomics report, it was a crooked deal – tricking regular people into generating free content which the owners of the social media harvesting operations would then use to fatten their own purses.

People who generate all kinds of digital effort (without getting paid for it) are – in our view – either narcissists, fools, ego maniacs, or people who haven’t assessed or exercised their own power to manage the world around them.

As we have stated from the digital get-go, unless you’ve got your own revenue angle (selling on eBay, for example) a lot of social isn’t worth your time.

The whole scam of social reached a new height of stupidity recently when a certain ‘book set me an email thinking it would entice me to click by saying “So-and-so just commented on a post you haven’t seen yet…”

Nor will I, nor should you.  If I really gave a shit about what someone thinks of something, I’d use a different tool.

It’s called a phone.

    Your life experience clouds some perceptions WordSlinger. As it does with all of us. By chance I knew everyone at the South Bend Tribune from the Publisher down. After 40-ish years as a subscriber, the only way we can get one is to drive the wrong direction by car, and burn a gallon of gas to buy a buck and a quarter worth of (old) news-print.

    I rode the dawn of social media via a few online forums. It was vastly worse than your comment section here, receiving upload contribution posts by the hundreds and/or thousands per day. It was all sailing related (OBSCON) so every Regatta spawned new momo. We had three hosts scattered around the blue ball to monitor flow on a continuous basis.

    Our main gig / calling card was devotion to the America’s Cup (a media relationship, from different deck chair, I retain to this day). An episode occurred in those original forums where a Spanish Sailing Media member with whom we got along great had a scoop. It was not wise to be connected to the info in any way (Rule: don’t draw down on millionaires). He posted, we deleted with note about the deletion, yadda yadda beginning of the end.

    Social Media (SM) had / has opportunity but the bones were picked, the banner ads didn’t work, clicks don’t count and … a caustic bent towards tribalism infects SM where it’s very distasteful. It can be an excellent *feeder* to original content .com properties. Hell, I could drive traffic your way due to SM but … who wants to type all day? Not.

    The global sailing community is a bunch of really swell people. I have never taken a cent from any one of several online ventures but received (and am still offered) unobtainium access to inner sanctums at high end racing. Many are working media to foot up the dosh. At it’s core though, a bunch of corinthian yachtsmen (in the best sense) and adoring sailor fans still make the world go round.

    My only remaining paper is the lakeland weekly which is owned and operated by our YC. We put out hard copy on a Tuesday cutoff deadline with numerous standing sections and lots of creative juice. I recruited our prior Editor and am helping row the boat (OBSCON) so our new guy doesn’t flounder. Circulation? 230 and I just made deadline :0)

    It’s almost too painful to mention but, we are hurting for all you Texacans. Like when friends got wiped in SE hurricane flooding, or family nearly burnt out in LA … we are with you.

    • Well, back in ‘95 the USAF’s Air University down in ‘Bama Town USA (Montgomery, AL), was directed by the USAF Chief of Staff, Ron Fogelman, to envision warfare in 2025, then 30 years into the future (current year, in case you’ve lost count).     Manage our expectations of grid down. Does this mean infrastructure to keep the generators going on the other side of the demarc were not affected by the grid going down.

    The grid will be down yet the computers needing DNS will still be powered while DNS servers didn’t make it but the local loops remain up. I must be missing a factor in the equation.

      Truth be told, MacArthur Park in the Westlake neighborhood of LA has only borne the soldier’s heroic name since May, 1942. Prior to that it was known as Westlake Park being named after a generous local philanthropist Dr. Henricus Westlake previously of Montreal, Canada. Dr. Westlake received his medical training at McGill followed by stints in Edinburgh and Vienna. Following his immigration to LA, he made a fortune in oil, mining, and agriculture. I think his LA oil rigs were in the ‘middle field’, but I couldn’t pin down a street address with a cursory search. By the way, the alleged sole remaining working LA oil rig also named “Westlake” is unrelated to Dr. Westlake, and is owned by a Chinese-born Taiwanese-American multibillionaire.

      Dr. Westlake received mention in a May, 1905 edition of the “LA Herald” upon his passing at the age of 48 years. As an aside, an adjacent advertisement from Clark County notified readers of a pending in-person auction of property lots on and around Freemont Street, Las Vegas.     I’m inclined to believe there’s no client list, and Bondi had not even looked at the files when she had that 29 second “interview” on FoxNews. There would be no reason for Epstein to have such a list. A digital Rolodex of contacts? Yes. A list of “clients?” No. He provided a service. People seeking such a service might have a providers’ list. The only list a provider might have is a “do not serve” list. Personally, I believe Epstein was a fink for either the CIA, MI6, or Mossad, (or maybe all three?) and as such, wouldn’t need a “do not serve” list because the spooks would have his six.

    However, I do not believe Epstein offed himself. There are too many coincidences WRT his death.
