PPI – OM and OOB’s – Easter Rally Back On?

Deflation is peeking out of the PPI numbers just out:

“The Producer Price Index for final demand decreased 0.4 percent in March, seasonally adjusted.

In March, over 70 percent of the decrease in the index for final demand can be traced to prices for final demand goods, which fell 0.9 percent. The index for final demand services declined 0.2 percent.

Prices for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services edged up 0.1 percent in March after
increasing 0.4 percent in each of the previous 3 months. For the 12 months ended in March, the index for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services advanced 3.4 percent.

To these old, jaundiced, bloodshot, tired eyes this sure looks like costs of production are coming down and that leads us to think a lot of retailers are just using Trump tariffs as an excuse to poke a little pechewzelwhacker at consumers…  (Hey! How come pechewzelwhacker ain’t in spell check while cheese wacker is?)

We will dig into the  rest of the day from really obscure to really pertinent.  Keeps the de-literate riffraff away.

OM and OOB

Been up early today, working on a special Peoplenomics report for next week.  On how to super-charge your brain.  Using the techniques in the report is more than slightly interesting. Because it allows you to tap into really obscure things in your past.  I mean like stuff that you had totally forgotten about at the conscious level.

Need and Example?

When I was young (mid-sixties) I shelved books at the Seattle Public Library.  Made a whopping 25-cents an hour.  Today, using the techniques in the Peoplenomics report, I happened to recall one title that seemed pertinent.  “Up the Down Staircase” – a 1964 novel by Bel Kaufman.  So I questioned the Electric George A.I. stack about it.

Book Summary: “Up the Down Staircase”
Bel Kaufman’s novel chronicles the chaotic, humorous, and often frustrating experiences of Sylvia Barrett, a new English teacher in a challenging urban high school. Analogy to Recent Stock Market Activity:
Applying the metaphor of “Up the Down Staircase” to recent stock market dynamics suggests markets currently face a similar futility. Investors attempting to achieve upward gains (“up the stairs”) are met with resistance from broader downward pressures, such as rising interest rates, geopolitical uncertainties, inflation concerns, and economic slowdowns. Each rally higher can feel like moving against a descending staircase, meaning efforts to advance may be short-lived, as market sentiment and structural forces continue to push downward.

In practical terms, traders buying into short-term rallies might find themselves repeatedly frustrated by pullbacks as systemic risks and economic headwinds persist. Just as Sylvia Barrett faced bureaucratic inefficiencies that impeded genuine educational progress, investors today grapple with a market where upward momentum remains limited by underlying structural challenges and broader macroeconomic dysfunctions.

Thus, the phrase “up the down staircase” captures the essence of current market struggles—investors pushing upward against systemic resistance, achieving fleeting gains within a generally descending environment.

It was a small but useful personality fragment to re-integrate….but not nearly as useful as a couple of charts which we will update along with more than a dozen others in tomorrow’s Peoplenomics report.

My point?  Simply that it’s looking (again) like the Easter Rally will be along as we have been yammering about.  And just in time to fish the BTFD crowd into the markets ahead of Israel popping Iran which seems likely this weekend.  For now?  Techs are trying to turn…

Next week we have options, a market close for Good Friday (unless you’re in Tehran, maybe – we’ll see on that one )- and with the closure a four-day workweek.  Not here, but somewhere; that’s the rumor.

Around the Ranch: Sniper Weekend

Pigs in the front yard are likely to come under fire this weekend as my friend Kalishnikov and I step out.  See, I tried to settle this is a nice way.  Offered the pigs a chance to change genders to stop dropping litters…no takers.

The “humane” option – repellents – didn’t get good reviews from the local feet store.  Where the advice was “Pigs hate electricity, so a run of electric fence about 8 inches off the ground will work…otherwise a high speed led overdose and give the meat to a shelter…”

Then it got worse.

Three raccoons got up on the lean-to greenhouse off the recording studio.  They pried up the polycarbonate clear roofing panel next to the house.  Jail brea- in that way.

Again, Humane doesn’t cut it.  I put out a banana in a “humane” trap and two of ’em were involved in the banana liberation,.  One got the banana, the other “held the door.”  Today, I’ll be tie-wrapping the banana in the trap.

All comes back on Elaine’s feral cats, though.  Cat food, regular feedings outside…here come the coons, here come the pigs…sheesh.

Next time you think about leaving the city, or some liberal comes around talking gun control, you’ll see why my definition of “gun control” is a two-inch grouping.

    free hand is a bit more erratic but still hits 12 inch plates at 500 yds.
    old age has not changed it yet other than my shoulder doesn’t like it now. LOL

    People always seem to do this the hard way. I believe sudden death is humane so … make sure to arrange certain kill(s). Take a bait (whole / carcass of spoiled chicken works great) and nail it to a shoot set-up tree. Note time of devouring the bait. Repeat but, chicken wire the carcass to a tree (so no one can run with it). Roll tape : OK Corral.

  7. You can eat the pigs, too, and no fear of the CZ brain rot showing up in deer populations.
    Keep some and share the rest is the best plan.
    (BTW the rule is kill them all. The babies represent at least three litters of new pigs in the next year. Also the babies are roast suckling pig ready. Happy Holidays!)

  9. Phew been a busy week so far.. A new chapter of drama to add to my miserable life lol lol…
    by encouraging from others for me to write a book.. it would be fun..years ago I started a journal.. but seriously.. who would believe it.. I lived it but dam if it sounds like Bull shit to me even though I lived all the drama personally.. who would even be interested in it.. for me its about surviving the chaos and learning experiences to maintain a quality of life at the bottom.
    I got thinking of that toxic fog .. and a sinus issue that’s been ongoing.. covid and the loss of taste and smell.. could this all be related???
    is the connection the nose.. similar to polluted air warnings in major cities..is this the common denominator for the issues being reported???

      LOOB, Before you venture out into the milling masses of sneezing, snorting, coughing, drippy-nosed crowds, you may want to try swabbing the inside of your nostrils with a Q- tip dipped in a colloidal silver (no double dipping) solution. The stuff is effective against many bacteria, fungi, spores and virus. I found some at a local Sprouts Natural Food store. Read up on Colloidal Silver before you try it.

  11. China announces that U.S. goods now face a record 125% tariff – the stock market went up – all the major indices are up over 1%. You’d think it would just the opposite. West Texas Tea jumped 1.2% a barrel. Even the Dollar, which has been on a steady slide down, went back over 100.00.
    If China holds that tariff, there will be a lot of jobs lost., a tick-up in inflation. Amazon and Temu will be bitch-slapped.
    Trump now has 89 days to make 150 trade agreements. I’m not buying it.
    As an Options trader of the floor of the CBOE said this morning.., “I think he just walked us right into a recession.” Very Possible.
    If war in the Middle East does escalate during these trade wars, the market is going to nose dive – triggering the breakers every day for weeks.

  13. In order for barbed wire to keep the piggies out, the bottom strand has to be about 4″ off the turf. The piggies won’t risk scratching their soft underbelly. Next step up is hog wire over the barbed wire. The pigs can and will pull up and break hog wire by itself. Next escalation is auger anchors and rebar to tie down the hog wire at locations under concentrated attack. Voice of experience in defense against a rampaging 500-pig herd one winter.
    I added a strand of barb wire to one fence line at the bottom >1500′. Took as much effort as the rest of the fence. Too late in the season; copperheads will be out early this year. Fence mods are for January-February.
    You might try spooking them. There used to be a Company with a solar rechargeable powered LED blinky light which would send critters packing. Still have one at the garage door to discourage mice. It worked on bigger critters as well.

    There really doesn’t appear to be any reason at all for the markets to be climbing like they are today., after one of the most volatile weeks on record. They are seeming just trying to end the week on a positive notes. ., and of course – possibly setting a trap for Monday’s short sellers.
    I am not holding any position over the weekend.

  17. I think it’s that time of year for predators. Yesterday I saw a coyote run across our side hill eyeing up my chickens. The hubby ran and got the 22 to fire a warning shot. He opened the door and an eagle flew off. I still have 14 chickens. Whew!!

  18. On a slightly related note , I am looking at buying a good quality BB or Pellet handgun and possibly a rifle of matching caliber. I believe that it would be .177 caliber. Not trying to kill anybody , more of a significant deterrent. Any thoughts pro or con would be appreciated.

  22. I used to complain about the neighbors cats invading my (non-dog) yard and setting off the security lights at night, but… One papaya tree had a fruit just beginning to ripen yellow. Nice big pit gnawed in the fruit. Next day the pit was bigger. Damn rats! They demolished one breakfast fruit, and when they (it?) took a chunk out of the next ripening fruit, I tied a rat trap to the tree trunk, with a nut and peanut butter bait. That night I heard the ‘snap!’, but next morning the trap was empty. I reset it, but now the rat is smart and avoids the trap when he climbs to the fruit. So I trimmed the green papayas before they ripen. They are edible when green. Filipinos use like squash, and Thai ‘Green Papaya Salad’ shreds them with salad sauce, so they are useful for the local cuisine. But damn… where’s that cat when you need one?
