Recession? No – Try Depression Next

I thought a reader was playing with me.  When I opened the suggested link: Stock futures fall after the Nasdaq Composite closes at a 2-year low.

Not like this wasn’t obviously in the works, already.  Especially since we have been forecasting a sub-30-thousand reading in our Aggregate Index work for months and months.

We’ll update our day-by-day tracking of the 1929 replay tomorrow on the Peoplenomics side.  But for now, the Elliott Wave idea is we are in Wave 3 down now:

As soon as I did this chart, futures rallied a bit but still down 70 on the Dow.  But you get the idea.

We also haven’t seen a reason to change these target ranges which we’ve given you before:

While this is NOT TRADING ADVICE we still have the potential to drop from here a further 20-30 percent (or more) and – after a small rally before midpoint 2023 – we will be set to enter the Second Depression with small wars raging and markets having blown off 83 percent of their value.

With this is mind, another chapter or two of my next book “Lifeboats” which is a survey of various coping ideas from the Great Depression and how what’s coming may be a bridge into a more environmentally (and less excess consumption) world.

Keyword: Recession

Joe Biden has mealy-mouthed his motley crew away from traditional definitions of Recession – because by the definition of 2 successive quarters of decline in GDP we’re already there.

Just out now is the National Federation of Independent Business outlook for the month.  To our tightly focused way of reading data, we’re in hard times, already. But a press release just out holds some reason for hope:

Thirty percent of owners report inflation as their single most important problem

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 11, 2022) – NFIB’s Small Business Optimism Index rose 0.3 points in September to 92.1, making the ninth consecutive month below the 48-year average of 98. Thirty percent of owners reported that inflation was their single most important problem in operating their business.

“Inflation and worker shortages continue to be the hardest challenges facing small business owners,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. “Even with these challenges, owners are still seeking opportunities to grow their business in the current period.”

Key findings include:

    • Owners expecting better business conditions over the next six months decreased two points from September to a net negative 44%.   Forty-six percent of owners reported job openings that were hard to fill, down three points from August and remaining historically high.
    • The net percent of owners raising average selling prices decreased two points to a net 51% (seasonally adjusted).  The net percent of owners who expect real sales to be higher increased nine points from August to a net negative 10%.  The NFIB Uncertainty Index decreased two points to 72.

As reported in NFIB’s monthly jobs report, owners’ plans to fill open positions remain elevated, with a seasonally adjusted net 23% of planning to create new jobs in the next three months. Of those owners trying to hire, 89% reported few or no qualified applicants for the positions they were trying to fill.”

You may remember last week, the Association of American Railroads weekly traffic update had continued to paint a picture of an America on hold:

“Total U.S. carload traffic for the first nine months of 2022 was 9,019,302 carloads, up 0.1 percent, or 9,791 carloads, from the same period last year; and 10,259,554 intermodal units, down 5.1 percent, or 552,271 containers and trailers, from last year.

Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 39 weeks of 2022 was 19,278,856 carloads and intermodal units, a decrease of 2.7 percent compared to last year.”

The data argues – convincingly – that we are in the final stages of an economic expansion that ran from the bottom of the housing bubble remnants in 2009-2010 to where we are now:

A further 20-30 percent decline forecast by some old geezer in the woods of East Texas may sound like bullshit (though we’ve been warning you for months now).  Would it have any more creds from a different source?  Stocks could fall ‘another easy 20%’ and next drop will be ‘much more painful than the first’, Jamie Dimon says.

Even the cryptos have reached a “no joy” zone.  BTC has continued to nibble at the high $18-thousands now and then.  A return to there – and much lower – is likely as “currency” is typically subject to wartime manipulations.

Still, one more bloom on the tulips is possible as Billionaire Paul Tudor Jones Expects Bitcoin Price to Be ‘Much Higher’ Than Today.  Some of the people, some of the time.

The War Fronts

While cruise missiles over Ukraine (and via Moldova) are headline stealers, the press forward to bring on the HUGE natural gas fields off Lebanon, Syria, and Israel made a step forward today.  Historic agreement between Israel and Lebanon reached.

But that doesn’t solve everything else that’s in play.

Outdoing even our modest doom porn efforts, Newsweek is all in today  explaining the Best Place to Survive Nuclear War in the U.S.

Which comes up because ‘A very dangerous road’: Putin and the U.S. navigate a new round of nuclear brinksmanship. Were such stories as Gizmodo’s U.S. Preps for Nuclear Fallout can be pardoned as extensibility, it’s another thing when military-related sites (like Stars and Stripes) run with What will the US do if Putin goes nuclear on Ukraine? Threats give question growing urgency.  Because America’s competitors read such sites for clues as to military thinking.

While Europe looks forward to a cold winter with severely limited natural gas resources, the Biden Sanctions escalation path has hurt American allies more than Russia.  Where, the champagne is out for their black-hats as Pro-Russian hackers take credit for cyberattacks on U.S. airport websites.

World War III looks to us like it’s in play, already, so we will continue with our Depression planning book for subscribers tomorrow.

Preemptive Slam? With Candace Owens’ new film “Biggest Lie Ever Sold”  slamming Black Lives Matter about to break tomorrow, we think it’s interesting that she’s being drawn  into the Kanye mess. Candace Owens Defends Kanye West In Wake of Blowback Over Antisemitic Tweets.  But, of course Kanye was already in trouble for running counter the left-wing narrative for wearing a White Lives Matter T-shirt.  We’ve been transported to a label-slinging world.

Take Pennsylvania, please.  When a politician says his opponent is sending his children to “a “privileged, exclusive, elite” school” is that anti-Semitic?  It is if you read Mastriano’s Attacks on Jewish School Set Off Outcry Over Antisemitic Signaling. Except, well, the school IS elite and it IS expensive.  Welcome to label-maker world.

To show you have crazy this label-making, virtue poisoning has gone, please turn your news urinals to LA City Council President Nury Martinez resigns and posts apology after leak of racist audio. She (allegedly) called a coworker’s Black son a “little monkey.”  (I’ve called White disruptive kids little monkeys myself – ankle-biters, too.)  The crazy part is  that if she’d simply called him a “disruptive little shithead” she’d probably still have her job. Because people have been conditioned a certain way. The accusers need only attach a racial connotation and presto! Stimulus, response.   Z’is crazy, or what?

  1. Both the Wilshire and Bitcoin in USD reached a daily average high valuation on 8 November 2021. These high valuations occurred in the 90th year of a US 1807 36/90/90/54 year fractal series with valuations lows in 1842-43, 1932, and an expected low in 2074. 8 Nov 2021 is contained in an interpolated March 2020 8/16/11 month fractal series. (Monthly composite equity valuation fractal series since the March 2009 low have been respectively and sequentially: 5/12/10/7; 3/8/6; 8/17/16; 11/26/16; and currently 8/16/10 of 11-16.) While the central bank expands and contracts debt/money to sustain the asset-debt system with the bank’s defined antipodal boundary conditions of unemployment vice consumer inflation; the system takes the central bank’s manipulation of credit/money expansion/contraction and self-assembles asset valuations into the most efficient mathematical trading saturation growth to peak and decay to nadir fractals. The system has only two simple self-assembly patterns: xy/2-2.5xy/2-2.5xy/1.5xy and xy/2-2.5xy/1.5-2.5xy. The current operative weekly model for this efficient self-assembly from 24 January 2022, the start of the final 11 month decay (8/16/11) is 7/15/14/10 weeks. The final 10 weeks is composed of a 2/4/4/3 week series. Friday 14 October 2022 would be a low in this model followed by valuation growth to about 8 November 2022 followed by a 3 week nonlinear drop. (Daily series from 6 September 2022 9/21/18/12 days.) Grayscale Bitcoin, a proxy for bitcoin is following an interpolated 17 June 2022 17/34/31 of 34 day decay series (ending 14 October 2022). The historical mismatch of the current 7+% 30 year mortgage rates and residential prices has collapsed the pool of potential able buyers. A severe economic contraction is qualitatively predictable. The 8/16/11 decay fractal is likely to be extended to a 8/16/16 month series.

    • interesting that British Financial astrologer Christine Skinner observed we could buy US stocks at very attractive prices in December.

    • Tides and other cycle works would point to today as the low with a rally up to the date you outline ……. very close anyway you like it.

Had a super-clear Technarama, 5.1 sound, Astound-A-Scope Six-Fifty, level dream last night. Very brief.
We live about eight miles west of Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. I’m sleeping, facing away from the large glass French doors that open out to the back deck, which looks toward Bragg / Pope.
It is early-early morning, and some light is just now creeping into the sky. A HYPER-BRILLIANT FLASH OF SUPER-LIGHT floods the room. No sound. In three or four seconds, ANOTHER! Then, about ten seconds later, ANOTHER. I know the over-pressure “sound” wave will be along in a bit under a minute, and I wonder if its worth getting up–will it make any difference? I am not excited; I am “resigned” to my fate.

    Then, I woke up.

I sure hope THAT one ISN’T a prophetic dream.

    Folks,
I missed the slowboat from China that at least 3 of 4 Hong Kong “Snowden Angels” have successfully been admitted to Canada since 2019. A Sri Lankan, his wife, an alleged concubine, and their respective children received asylum and now live in Quebec after sheltering on-the-run Edward Snowden in Hong Kong in 2013 before he fled to Russia. According to German media and various CBC reports, the “angels’ ” Canadian lawyer based in Hong Kong since the ’90’s began to have problems with Chinese officialdom in the mid-teens forcing him to leave the country with some haste. Curiously his legal representation firm was said to be the same as Julian Assange.

The not-for-profit charity “For the Refugees” overseeing the rescues remains operational in Montreal according to their website.

  6. “Newsweek is all in today explaining the Best Place to Survive Nuclear War in the U.S.”

that is what they don’t get.. is there are no safe places… the correction would be massive..
first off.. what would you do if you were the leader of a country and the biggest counttries were not going to let you survive as a country.. and you knew that the odds were that if you gave in.. they would kill not only you but everyone related to you..
but you have massive amounts of nukes at your command.. first the nuclear pseunomy at port cities.. of each of the countries bent on distroying you.. then draw an x over the USA and light off five high altitude emp blasts.. first those in the bigger cities would all die either quickly or slowly from radiation poisoning.. the lack of infrastructure.. ( oh remember they didn’t construct these for security but for profits from their idol the dollar bill) then the nucklear winter..
    harsh nasty and horrific..
what would the USA do.. ever seen the movie war games..

does the USA have an automated response program like the wopper.. more than likely.. it would be over with… then all the studies say that there would be life changing.. let mother nature do her job of cleaning out society for the decades to follow.. then come in as the savior..
    no one win’s..
we should have been investing in our infrastructure and our people rather than wars all these years .. instead we have neglected our infrastructure and most of it is failing.. and ready for a cascade failure..

    • They failed to map out where those underground bunkers are. Guess they don’t want our company.

Btw, had an odd thought while reading about the potential rail strike … seems to be fluctuating to strike, not to strike, to strike, not to strike … you know. Kind’a like the nuke thing.

Wonder if an actual rail strike will be used when the nuke strike gets to the boiling point, just prior to an attack of that level. – gotta have those railways open to move military stuff … and herd people. You know how they do like they do.

      • ” gotta have those railways open to move military stuff ”

Speaking of: I spent 22 minutes or so yesterday, watching a NS roll west past me carrying a shit-ton of materiel — No tanks or APCs but armed HMMWVs, medium trucks, semis with modified flatbeds (didn’t occur to me until later they could be MLVs without the missiles), field C&C, telemetry, ambulances, etc. There were Humvees with M-2 and rocket (looked like open turrets?), and medium trucks with those rectangular missile batteries — Lotta stuff I’ve never seen going to Grayling, Leonard Wood, Jefferson, or the other Midwestern training grounds. Also some of the vehicles were forest camo and some were OD, but many were desert sand or desert camo.

    • Hi-altitude EMP (HEMP) weapons don’t cause ground level radiation: they cause power, communication, and electronics failures. Most likely scenarios for grid-down are cascade failure of water and sewage treatment, food distribution breakdown, widespread civil unrest, various hypothermia memes, and general chaos. This is very similar to coastal hurricane conditions, only over much larger physical territory, and no place to run to.
Sometimes I hear people describing an EMP as a quick trip down to the 1800’s pre-industrial existence. I don’t see that support level being there if a grid-down scenarios goes past 60 days. Best to keep the power on. There are too many people with too few pre-industrial skills.

    • LOOK, LOOB.

“THEY” have been fleecing and siphoning money OUT OF the USA for over 50 PLUS years, just like a vacuum cleaner….ever see Oblivion with Ted Cruz, just like those alien ships sucking the water off of the planet, these criminal scum have been sucking up all of the assets of the USA, from every single sphere that you can think of.

They have sucked out everything they touch; not just infrastructure.

They have sucked out the education system; lower and higher.

On and On and ON and ON!

Every single sector, everywhere, ALL over the country has been sucked off of and out of.

I can’t list them all, just think of anything you can think of in the USA, and it has been sold off, dismantled, deconstructed, destroyed, changed, morphed, and when they can’t handle it/manage it surreptitiously, they introduce diversity, multi-culturalism, racism, critical race theory, transgenderism, being born one sex or the other no longer fact but fancy, and they continue to manufacture new race wars, and other fabrications keeping the population divided/harassed/upset/distracted emotionally, financially, spiritually, physically.

We cannot even count the Quadrillions that has been sucked out of the American Systems.

THE COUNTRY IS GONE, IT IS A PAPER TIGER.

  7. I was tired. Stacking wood for the Winter can really knock an old body down. So.., with an adult beverage I started playing in MathCAD with an idea I had [using a theoretical decay math model].
From the high in August [ the 16th ] on ‘My Aggregate’ – I ended up [ over an hour later and a refill.,] with a low of 10,345.92. Very close to Ure number of 10,062,28.
There is however a few caveats here.., one is – there is no way to predict., add-in “emotional variables”. One nuke could / would send the whole math problem into the dumpster. The way people react always screws things up !
I would like to add-in Fibonacci percentages [ as variables ] to that formula., but that is hours of re-write & testing – that I just don’t feel like doing.
.., but we seem to be in the same bleacher-section of the ballpark.
    .., we’ll see.

    • The problem with any “value” projection for “markets” after a nuclear tit for tat is that:

      1) Communications for trading would be hit or miss for some time, maybe for years, for anything other than physical commodities (necessities of life items where Bills of Lading could well take the place of “Financial Markets” for the exchange of value – ala Middle Ages valuation processes)

      2) Markets for anything other than physical commodities would most likely be closed “for the duration” of whatever … again talking about years (go back and look at the multi year financial market closures the have happened in the Western World during times of extended Wars).

      3) WHAT individual companies would even survive? compounded by the question of HOW would you even determine what their “profitablity” is if they did somehow survive in some form?

Effectively virtually all existing companies would have to go through some sort of Bankruptcy as many of their their physical assets would be destroyed, as would their order books and the ongoing operations necessary for them to “service their debt”, and bankruptcy of course wipes out vitually ALL outside ownership interests in companies.

(NO DEBT FREE companies left in the US …. the Harvard Business School Model got rid of that “old ‘backward’ relic”of Corporate Finance after the Depression. MANY smaller and mid size manufacturing companies survived the Depression PRECISELY because they had absolutely NO DEBT!! … NONE at all!! … they could just lock the doors and as long as the owners could come up with enough cash pay their real estate taxes the owners could then come back a few years later, turn on the lights, and restart operations … a number of companies in my area did that including a couple that later morphed into Fortune 1000 companies. Totally shuttered with “maybe” just a night watchman, keeping the roof patched and the real estate taxes paid, for 4 – even up to 6 years … and then voila orders started flowing in from Europe because of War clouds and they reopened the factories and people went back to work. With Harv Bus Schl recommended debt the equipment inside the buildings would have been sold off and removed long before they finally were able to restart those operation … so the bankers could get 5 cents, or less, on the dollar of the debt.)

  8. As long as the currency holds together we should be fine. If the currency goes hopefully we get a short notice before the Poseidon adventure.

If I could I would pay my property taxes in advance but they won’t let me.

    • Don’t worry Steve,

The tax assessors and collectors will all be very busy keeping themselves together and fed. The last thing on their mind will be working for the “man.” And depositing checks. There will be no banks and no checks.

It will all be over, with a new sun rising. It won’t be pretty.

  9. well.., what? I leave the Options Board for 30 minutes and the Dow does a 350 point reversal. Missed that one !

  10. I missed that one too ! Went to clean and sharpen the ax for splitting kindling., came back and the Dow has made another 300 point reversal. Guess I am not supposed to be in the game today – too many other things going on.

Now on another note.. they can go and reclaim the oil.. from the plastics and foam that we toss out daily.. of course they would have to build reclamation centers.. for recycling.. recycling oil is easy and doesn’t take much energy if they do it right I think it is something like twenty watts of power for one that was being produced for home use..( you cannot buy one if you live in the usa) .. they could even go and use solar if they so chose to.. but I doubt they will.. I say get the coal miners working again.. I love coal.. and I want to build or buy a coal heater if I build one I will use the rocket mass heater design because that burns the exhaust so all you have is steam coming from the chimney…. use a rocket mass heater for coal and you not only use less coal but no toxic fumes.. dam that would be nice.for my multi fuel stove now.. I had a burn box made that was just a few inches higher.. does the same thing..as my cat food can infra red heater..by putting a chimney burn grate on top of the cat food can heater the heat burns up the exhaust. I would love to see someone make multi fuel pellets using one part of coal dust and three parts of wood sawdust.. nice hot heat from it and can be used in any multi fuel stove and using stuff left to rot.. we could use hemp for oil to.. or algae.. algae is easy but there again you have to set up for it.. and so far all of our components are made outside the country..

“Can’t wait for the lib beat down on Tulsi Gabbard. How dare this intelligent free thinking patriot leave the clan.”

It’s coming. ‘Thing is, most of the Repub pundits think she’ll become a good little repukacan and that ain’ta gonna happen. For years, she was the Liberal Democratic Congressman from Hawaii which, if it isn’t the most-leftist State, is certainly in the top five. Gabbard doesn’t do spots on Tucker or Hannity because she’s become Right-leaning, she does them because she is honest.

I shouldn’t be surprised if she runs for President again, as either the Green, Constitution, or Libertarian Party candidate. The fractional parties everywhere from Green to Libertarian will court the hell out of her, and she will suck votes from both of our corporate parties. It would be interesting if she ran as a Libertarian, and both Repugs and Demons ran really weak candidates. I’d venture to say Lt. Col Gabbard would not have a Ross Perot “daisy” moment…

    • Yes C , we can not have the former slave decendants running around telling Truth
biggest mistake the dems made was losing the Civil War
let US reinstate slavery and while we are at it,,, womens sufferage has to go , shut the women up and take back their ability to vote!!!
women are to damn emotional to think or reason properly.

Of course I AM just jesting,, I love women,,, I just want to show your anti-freedom, anti free speech, bias. Sorry, ya beat me to it.
have you seen the mansion that the leader of BLM bought with the BLM money? Truth or grift?
How about Tulsi? shall we join those, who become more aware of the evil that leads the dem party of today?

      • “The leader of BLM purchased THREE mansion”

Now I wonder @oldal .. was he the leader.. or just a manager in charge of base operations and logistics for a massive campaign of demonstrations…..
Now lets say he was in theory just a manager in charge of operations of a massive undertaking such as what went on.. Now I would think that If you are the manager in charge of the logistics to a series of demonstrations that did so much damage in the billions of dollars nation wide and destruction.. rapes pillaging etc.. wouldn’t you want to be compensated for your hard work just for the risk you were taking upon yourself..
with all the reports of money being offered to people to commit these heinous acts.. you would think he would want some to in compensation for taking such a .. big risk.. good thing he had support at the top..
January 6 didn’t do anything nearly as horrific as the blm and antifa riots did.. and look what they are doing with that.. it is still on the news daily..

    • “I want to build or buy a coal heater if I build one I will use the rocket mass heater design because that burns the exhaust so all you have is steam coming from the chimney”

My grand daughters fiancee was asking me to keep an eye out for a wood stove.. they build houses and the cut off.. is amazing he would have enough to heat for years.. anyway I suggested him making a rocket mass heater for it.. then a continuous feed bin.. right now I am getting the stuff ready for the kids to make cat food can infrared heaters.. pretty easy.. only thing I need to do is find a few number ten vegitable can’s empty.. and we are on the road.. I think I will make them continuous feed.. when the older grandkids made theirs.. we made batch fed cat food can stoves.. or camp stoves..

one year I gave away siege stove brackets to everyone on the xmas card list..
villagers in third world countries were dying because of the carbon monoxide from their cooking fires.. by showing them a different way to cook their food.. saves lives.. so I am a big supporter of siege stoves.. for a camp stove its the best…. the cat food can infrared heater uses the same principle.. what can you make that comes out of the trash uses a minimum amount of fuel and can keep you warm.. and versitile enough to use anything for a fuel..

  11. Wow… I seen something today that was interesting…
I was with a friend at a visit for his therapist.. and in the corner was a cart..seven foot tall mirrors etc. Strands of lights and I had to ask..what the hell is that..
It’s a snozelen…we use that for extrem trauma and end of life..

    https://youtu.be/iVVui5peUBA

And I thought of this.. the therapist said they use fog machines to project images to ease their passage.. wow..
In all the years I have never heard of such a thing..

  12. In your eternal quest to find the economy replaying 1929, you may have overlooked that the economy has reached the replay of 1931, well on it’s way to total collapse and the replay of 1932:

    Mass layoffs-

    Collapse in demand and trade-

While Ure readers patiently wait for that heralded stock crash, the economy crumbles in the background. Depressions are back office phenomena; the media only takes notice when there is simply so much economic mayhem that it cannot be swept under.

And of course, there is always Euro pleb horsesh!t-

  13. It probably doesn’t matter a whit what Russia, the WEF, the Deep State, Dims, R’s or whoever you want to hold out there as the latest boogie man, does. In the end, and not that far off really, as Ben describes things, The Greater Reset will require much more out of the survivors than many who even consider it here on George’s website. Ben dropped a new video yesterday that has some interesting thoughts on the developing storm in our solar system and what it means to us all.

    • VERY interesting video! I added the book he recommended, “The Body Keeps the Score,” to my list.

      • Yes, it sounds like a good book to add to anyone’s collection. There was another one very much like it that I read as a kid while in the military entitled “The Kink and I: A Psychiatrist’s Guide to Untwisted Living” by James D. Mallory, Jr., M. D. I loved books as a kid. They were my Internet and the more we moved around the more important they became.

      • Thanks both. I’d never heard of that book title until now. It turns out that the city library system here has 23 copies in circulation and the current waitlist is a dozen people long…

  14. Further to my note above,

“The Body Keeps the Score” is pending at my library.

I borrowed and read the second book “The Kink and I” by Mallory and Baldwin from Internet Archive. It begins as one would imagine on the psychiatrist couch before moving to the pulpit for the balance of the book. At any rate, it is preserved on IA for those so inclined.

  15. “Newsweek is all in today explaining the Best Place to Survive Nuclear War in the U.S.”

The best place to survive nuclear war in the U.S. is Patagonia…

  16. I broke down and bought “Threads.” It is sold out in many places, including Severin (Blu-Ray U.S. publisher) so I figured I’d better grab a hard copy while I could. Amazon recommended “The Day After” (with which I’m familiar) and “Testament” (which I’m not) so I acquired them also, although perhaps not from Amazon…
