Pillows and Turkeys

Coming up on 3 AM out here in East Texas.  Very pleasant night talking to George Noory on Coast-to-Coast (some additional show note links are in the next post).

Back to bed and sleeping in – which I’ve only been able to do once in a long while. Need to get up and pop the turkey in by 11 AM in order to have dinner about 4 PM.

News on the Overnight

War news out of Ukraine remains very uneven.  For one, the Sanctions on Russia could leave the European Union (NATO) very cold this winter as New sanctions package will ban 45 Russian tankers from entering EU ports.  So almost 50 tankers could be banned.  Another Biden “ready, fire, aim?” action?

Meanwhile, Biden keeps sending war materiel into the fray: Ukraine urged to lower conscription age to 18; US to send Kyiv more weapons.

Whether Russia will hold back to give Trump time to ascend to the oval is in question: Trump names retired general Keith Kellogg as envoy for Ukraine and Russia

And the back-stabbing by the War Party goes on: Trump administration picks targeted with bomb threats and swatting.

But all the news on warfare is bad – a few glimmers of hope.  Will Ceasefire Deal To End Israel-Hezbollah War Achieve Lasting Peace For Lebanon? We may get some sense of scale on relations as ‘Global escalation’: Unnerving plans revealed to ruin everyone’s Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

And out in the WestPac comes word that Foxconn is coming to Texas: Foxconn pays NT$1 billion for land in Texas.  That’s about 33-million for land in Harris county.  Which – if you don’t know the lay of the land here, puts it down around Houston somewhere.

And here’s a nice one to hear about: A Walmart employee was called into work on her day off. She left a millionaire. Stories like this always begin sounding hopeful.  But they lose a bit of luster when the taxes are taken out.  Still, beats not winning, no doubt.

OK – back with more later…

(7:00 AM  Update)

Sleep never works out as planned after being up in the middle of the night. So no point going to war with daylight – fresh coffee.

Wit and wisdom from the 3806 ham radio group consists (so far) mainly of “Gobble till you wobble…” which was a new on.  Always learning, right?

Up on 3900 the merits of injecting the bird with Jalapeno juice was being considered.  A the checking were reporting a big drop in temps from Wednesday.

And then a few minutes later a discussion of a dessert I’ve never sampled before: Better Than Sex Cake Recipe.  Um…does it really exist?

Write when you…er…something or other…

  1. Example of turkey slang.

“Let’s talk turkey – when did you last pay your rent on time?”

“Don’t call me again until you are ready to talk turkey!”

“I smoked for 15 years and then one day I just quit cold turkey.”

“How did you break your habit? Laser treatment? No, just cold turkey.” ”

” Robert took my car without asking and was in an accident. What a turkey!”

John didn’t give his wife anything on her birthday. What a turkey!

  2. You were a good talker/guest last night!

I cringed at fecal implant, but thankfully you slipped it in quickly, with no resulting pause or Noory comment.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving George, Elain, and the Urban Survival Team!
Anna as usual was chosen to work at the hospital today and tomorrow, so our spread is small, but she prepared most of it to pop in the oven this morning, and for us to prepare her a plate for tonight.
We (Me, Anna, Anna Elizabeth(Liz) and Little Big Al) have grown to love a small no leftovers Thanksgiving. We don’t have any family here, Big Art has five of his own to gather with, so we have a Nice turkey breast, a similar sized Kentucky ham, dressing and gravy, the usual holiday casseroles and potatoes, Cranberry Chutney and Milos Iced Tea.
It is all in the oven and should be serving in about an hour.
Hope everyone reading this has a Best Thanksgiving ever, until the next one, and hope we are all here for that one too.

  6. Happy Thanksgiving.

Yahoo says: “Parts of the U.S. may get a glimpse of northern lights this Thanksgiving”

Being in between seasons they, those who aren’t us must be charging the weather weapons. Look for a major snow storm this Winter. Boo! Or is it Gobble?

  7. Happy Thanksgiving to Elaine and George and their honored guest.

The better than sex cake was an interesting video to watch, seeing another baker in action. However, I would never use just water in a cake mix but use real butter melted, whipping cream, and some sweetened condensed milk in the cake mix. You might also add sweet coconut milk to the caramel and sweetened condensed milk mixture that is poured over the baked chocolate cake and soaked into the holes made by a knife. I would also add chocolate bits to the chopped heath bar mix. Still think sex is better with the right partner.

    • The only difference in the recipe I have used and this one is the sweetened condensed milk.. I take it put it in a pan of water where the water is over the top of the can..then boil it for an hour on a slow boil..
instead of oil.. I always use 1 cup of mayonnaise.
water heavy cream.. boiling the sweetened condensed milk turns it into a caramel sauce..
1 box devil’s food cake mix
      1 cup of mayonnaise
      1/2 cup milk
      3 large eggs
1 cup chocolate chips, milk or semisweet
      1 cup heavy cream
1 can of sweetened condensed milk ( converted into caramel sauce)
      12 ounces Cool Whip
      3 Heath bars, crushed

nothing is better than sex and personal connection but it is a close second..

  8. Oh My God….
this year I tried something different.. I made pickles in quart storage bags..

    https://www.amazon.com/Enkrio-Reusable-Ziplock-Sandwich-Organizer/dp/B07VNDLHK1/ref=sr_1_20?

the dill pickles are the best ever..today we pulled out a quart of beet pickles and we devoured them..they are the best beet pickles I ever made.
we heat seal the bags after making the pickles..then transfer them into a quart container er to put in the fridge after opening them..

      • I actually fermented my cucumbers this year.. I used the Amish method when I made a trip to the colony to get cucumbers the girls gave me a hard time about my gardening ability..lol lol it was fun having these young lady’s tease me.. then shared that they keep their pickles crisp by fermentation.. three days then brine them.. I used vinegar in the brine but dam they are good.. the colony is a great place..kids are kids and it appears just like it use to in the usa.. low stress happy families laid back and a Norman Rockwell community..

        • Exactly.. plastic is nothing but oil.. in a microwave it leaches out some of the harmful elements of oil..
every single human disposes approximately seven pounds of spun oil a week.. that can be converted back into oil cheaply..
in other countries they sell a countertop unit to convert plastic into fuel.. Washington state college is as far as I know the only college in the USA that was allowed to have one..from what I heard was they bought it before our government made the illegal to sell in the usa.. its the same with the self Cooling cans..I tried to send a friend in the rangers and a brother a twelve pack of cold ones for their birthdays in the deserts.. but because I live in the usa.. I wasn’t allowed to..

        • Like The solar towers and strengthening of the grid handing out grid tie solar units.. working on our infrastructure.. green scapeing and air wells and CO2 filters.. None of it will change until the business model changes from the business model of stuffing big buck billies pockets to one of looking out for the people of our country..

        • LOOB, it shouldn’t be that hard to build a device to thermally decompose plastic into a flammable liquid for heating. I might draw the line at running an expensive engine on it, but for space heating, why not? There are a couple of videos on youtube with the concept, but I’d plan on a backyard device that can be heated with wood to start, and any non-condensed off-gas to continue.

As usual, DIY takes time, and that’s what we have the least of these days. It could be rewarding though.

        • @ NM Mike

“LOOB, it shouldn’t be that hard to build a device to thermally decompose plastic into a flammable liquid for heating.”

It probably isn’t. The real issue is that among other compounds, ALL vinyl chlorides release hydrogen chloride gas when heated past their melting point.

    • Da hell is a beet pickle ?

Sounds rather unappetizing to my way of thinking.. If the dogs wont eat something – neither will I .
Hard to imagine my dogs being hungry enough to eat a beet, let alone a pickled beet. Gotta check rule book for possible Violations of the good tasting food act..

Is there something to the aging tastebuds? they may not be as sensitive as they were in younger years theory? Does this explain why some more experienced types like to eat stuff that I find stomach churning ? My Father in Law was part Danish (https://youtu.be/4ukrCvhxP2g?si=GaI3XzDvWyvWIzRE) and loved any seafood in a can, and placed on Cracker..packed in Oil, Mustard.. Smoked Oysters, Kippers…ugh the smell would waft across the living room and slap my face everytime..Not air sandwiches, dry heave gaggers! Now you Youse know why the call em Smelts .

      • Hi, George,

Seafood in a can is a great snack. Love the oysters, kippers, sardines, tuna, and salmon in cans. They are very good on crackers with cream cheese. However, the smell is something you either like or absolutely cannot tolerate.

        • Reminds me of my former sheriff, who usually ate lunch at his desk. During a staff meeting in his office, he glanced down at his desk. Noticing a small dried lump, he scraped it up with his fingernail, took a sniff, and ate it. “Mmmm… sardines!”.

But then he was also the one who, when he made announcements over the office PA system, would announce, “Now hear this! Now hear this!”, followed by “That is all!” after the announcement.

      • Actually dogs love beets

        https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/nutrition/can-dogs-eat-beets/#:~:text=Beets%20are%20an%20acidic%20vegetable%2C%20which%20can%20cause,them%20only%20as%20the%20occasional%20treat%20or%20snack.

I call beets one of gods miracle plants.. the leaves the root every part of the beets is edible..the leaves are best just before the root starts to thicken.. like the dandelion its a miracle plant..

        https://www.webmd.com/diet/health-benefits-beetroot

and the ancient civilizations used the juice for dying royal garments and for drinks.. I made beet pickles dam good this year.. and the juice made an ancient recipe for beet wine..
You can make a caramel sauce from it or candy a fruit leather with apples and beets or beet juice..I like buttered beets with salt and pepper.. beet leaves in a salad..well you get a gourmet salad mix your getting that in it along with dandelion and radish..
in lentil juice and beet juice and raw honey the nutrients in the juice will help a twig grow roots.. loved that rose your hubby got you from the florist.. want to sprout a banana tree from that bunch of bananas on the counter..
        heavenly fathers gift to us..
the beet wine is amazing ..I never once considered it for a wine ..then I got the recipe..dam good.. I seen an oak branch on the ground while walking FANG 1 yesterday.. after deep consideration I will grab it char it and age the beet wine with it..
before you hate it..go and try it..

        • Too funny Loob, too funny. My Wife makes the Dogs food every week. Roasts vegetables, lentils and what notz, with either chicken/ground round or bison.
Our tri-color Corgi in law, Daughters Corgi had “porked up” over past 2 years till Son in Law arrived, legally, from Ireland (2 year wait).
Soon after his arrival Corgi started on daily “walkies” and the rolls started melting. Past year they switched her over to the Farmers Dog( https://www.thefarmersdog.com/ ) – premade whole foods, and now at 8 years old – she has girly figure back, and her puppy like energy has returned. She is a good a match for my 2 monkys…the Irish Jacks nowadays.

PS – rest of the Fam luvs the those nasty Beets. to the point they make a Beet salad in the Summertime, which is basically just sliced Beets, salad dressing and couple sliced onions..like I said previously..Gaggerz.

        • (“I have tried beets. Tastes like the dirt it came from.”)

oh my hank…sorry to hear that. I have had beets like that but it wasn’t from the beets but rather from the one making them..

        • I’m happy to eat beets, or pickled beets, as long as I can find the can opener.

If they don’t come sliced in a can, they’re too complicated. Raw food more complicated than a banana confuses me. It’s best to know what you’re not good at and approach with caution. My worst case of food poisoning what when I tried to cook some potatoes.

        • love steamed or boiled beets w/butter salt+pepper
          hate sweet pickles
          love dill pickles
have not found a pickled beet yet, that I like.
the green tops are ok, like the dandelions my grandmother fed me, butter, salt+pepper

  9. Somehow a land based friend found a turkey down here, and I picked a big pumpkin that was growing near the road so we could make a couple pies on board to bring ashore for the party which has now grown to 14 because you can’t leave out anyone on Thanksgiving, even though it is not remotely a cultural thing here. In fact, there is nothing too good thought of about the colonizers. Americans do seem to be better liked than the others, so maybe a big feed with all the goodies that can be procured will be welcomed. Lots of food so no one will go hungry.
Did make a whatsapp connection to parts of the family marooned on the dirt. No political arguments is the best part. And it’s not raining so it’s even better.
Happy Thanksgiving, frens. Lucky we missed her winning.
    Stiks

    • For readers who don’t kno,w Stiks is on a 42 ft cat (or was it triamaran) somewhere in the South Pacific. He lives to remind George of his 10+ years on his 40 ft offshore capable monohull. And what it’s like to tie a bowline behind your back on a pitching foredeck in the rain at 2am…OK, better now.

      • Hi, George,

What a great knot a bowline is. We used the bowline in vertical caving back in the 1970’s for our ascending knots on rope to climb out of pits, as well as for rigging ropes to anchors. Nowadays, vertical cavers use mechanical various devices, but back in the old days, bowlines and prusik knots, named after Dr. Karl Prusik, were widely used.

  10. Happy belated Thanksgiving to all! I missed George’s talk Wednesday evening on C to C due to having to drive 200+ miles the next day to visit with my daughter and her husband’s family. Too bad the talk wasn’t Thursday night when I was driving back. Such is life.

I’m not much on cake, though I’ll eat it if it’s in plain sight. I can’t possibly imagine any cake that can compete with good sex, regardless of the advertising. Even the best drugs can’t compete. What on earth is this magical cake?
