Lookahead Timeline of Summer

I happened to get up early this morning – many projects going on, so 3 AM is not as unreasonable as it sounds… – and it struck me that maybe we should publish a “predictive timeline report” so people can plan the rest of their lives more effectively.

This Week

Stock futures are up about a hundred on the Dow, but there’s a small chance that market highs are complete  – but not a BIG chance.

Arguing in favor of “Tops are In!” was a post this weekend from our friend The Economic Fractalist.  You can read more of his comments here (and on his site, here), but the short version is:

“The ECB has already lowered interest rates; with the German DAX and French CAC responding after the pivot by falling about 5 percent over the last 5-6 weeks.

Over the same time frame the debt and Zombie-company laden Russell 2000 has fallen likewise about 5 %, which is about 17 % below its peak valuation on 8 Nov 2021.”

On the other hand, we think the market is still gaming higher (insane as that sounds) and traditionally the highs of the year come in a window from (roughly) the second week of August to the middle of September.

For now, our Aggregate Index showed today opening based on early futures pricing close to 46,427.14.  Last Wednesday was a potential high on Juneteenth of 46,711.47. The judgment call is whether we keep sinking or whether this is just a “normal” pause?

News Doesn’t Drive (But it really does…)

Today is a real snoozer on the newsers, but tomorrow could see some bruisers. (You know it’s slow when Weather is the lead and its summer…)

Tomorrow life returns to interesting  We have Housing Prices and the Chicago Fed (CFNAI).  Not to diss the Dallas Fed’s mid-morning report today, it just doesn’t have much of a rock-em, sock-em to it.

Wednesday is another lame news flow on the open, though mid-morning the survey of business uncertainty might set off the PVCs.

Right there, however, we can see how the news flow and markets might roll.  With a quiet one today, a small bounce. But Housing Prices tomorrow could set off all kinds of inflationary talk – and that could push the coming Fed cut out (except, wink-wink, it’s an election year). Whether it’s worth playing though is anyone’s guess. Animal Spirits are only predictable to, um…animals?

That dates back to what John Maynard Keynes had to say:

“Even apart from the instability due to speculation, there is the instability due to the characteristic of human nature that a large proportion of our positive activities depend on spontaneous optimism rather than on a mathematical expectation, whether moral or hedonistic or economic. Most, probably, of our decisions to do something positive, the full consequences of which will be drawn out over many days to come, can only be taken as a result of animal spirits – of a spontaneous urge to action rather than inaction, and not as the outcome of a weighted average of quantitative benefits multiplied by quantitative probabilities.”

Frankly, we’ve never been fans of Keynes – too much “Demon Haunted World” in his thinking for us.  Everyone is crazy so why waste time understanding how crazy, right?

Thursday the retest of “news can be a downer” because that’s when unemployment numbers and durable goods, GDP, and international trade wash ashore. Digital flotsam and jetsam are expected. See how this works?  In a market inflating higher, pessimism before-the-fact and then a moment or two of sobriety. Then higher.

Personal Income rolls Friday but we don’t know (because by then, world news may grab the steering wheel and run the world off the road).

Here Comes the Fourth!

OK – IF (and that’s the prince of weasel-words) we see a soft week now, then next week ought to see a rally going into the Fourth.  We hit a small (at least for now) interim high Juneteenth, so another holiday and another chance for people to loose their minds. Works for us.

The Fourth is always a grand time here in the woods.  With no rain for a (marvelous) couple of weeks, we fear the outbreak of incendiary madness. The firework stands are opening, and people are loading up already.

Next week – arsonist genes aside – a week from now, I’ll be telling you what a God-awful bore summer is.  Which Jerome Powell may give us some relief from a week from tomorrow which he pronounces on things.  The ADP jobs report comes out a week from Thursday.  If you want to come back in and work Friday, feel free (stupid might fit better) because all you will get will be thinner markets and the federal jobs number.

After the Fourth Bets Get Interesting

All weekend, making dizzying circuits of the dusty lawn on the rider, the one thing the mind kept coming back to was “Is Trump Sentencing Day going to be a Buy the Rumor, Sell the News?”  Or will it be a nothing-burger?

But then, we come to the Paris Olympics and G.A. Stewart’s Nostradamus prospects for a possible mass casualty event there. Second half of July feels sketchy.

And that gets us to the whole – very dangerous – expansion of The Wars which is getting underway.

Ukraine? Warmonger elements in the West have been coaching Ukraine well on how to delivery maximum “piss-off” factor to the Russians.  As we have told you previously, the war-sellers had started to violate the “spirit” of “Open Skies” because that’s one way both the Russians and the U.S. can keep an eye on that (not very trustworthy) Other Guy.

The West tweaked Russia again – badly – overnight. What’s coming? – Ukraine hits Russia’s space communications and early warning center – Moscow officially blames the US.

The third Obama term (Biden) is in an odd position of not supporting Israel in Lebanon for reasons we can only imagine. Gen. Charles Brown says US will not assist Israel in fighting Hezbollah.

At the Ranch: Serial Equipment Failures

Happily mowing away Sunday morning when a piece of paracord that had fallen of a fence line snuck unnoticed into the 54 inch three-blade whirling blades. It was from an antenna installation.

This caused the mower to die and after restarting,  went down to the welding area to lift the mower and cut away the paracord so I could get mowing again.

The tool of choice for such things is the Kubota and the impact wrench. turn on compressor and by the time the mower is hanging in the air, the air pressure is up and the recovery process is about 5-minutes.

(One tip: When you have one socket that fits a certain task (like mower blades) put a piece of paper inside that socket to save time going through the 10 sizes that don’t fit….)

Would have been great but the tractor battery was done, kaput, over and out.

While I wait for a new group 51-R lithium to show up, the mower hoisting was done with an old-fashioned wire rope come-along.  Now the task expanded and by the time all the paracord was removed, it was 75-minutes later and soaring into the upper 80s with a side of morning dew to add to the sweat. I was basting like a pig.

Determined not to fail, I did get the yard done, but wow. Miserable job.

The lesson? Always test start your backup plan!

Oh, and don’t buy a battery charger that won’t charge a flat-assed dead-dead battery.  A lot of ’em nowadays won’t.  Miracles of modern tech, huh?

Write when I cool down; I’ll be snoozing till the Dallas Fed numbers…

      • My old Ford tractor has a toolbox built into the right side (floor, running board, or whatever it is) where tractor-specific tools can be placed for easy availability. That old toolbox inspired me to acquire a set of LARGE Williams combination wrenches and add a few sockets to the set I put in there. It might be worthwhile for some to get a card box and throw necessary, specialty tools for every vehicle, in that vehicle. I haven’t, but I carry a large Craftsman toolbox in the Expi. I HAVE thought about hitting the size markings on the sockets and Allen wrenches with Prussian Blue indicator dye though, since the older I get, the less my eyes want to read the scratchings on the newer sockets.

  2. Equipment never fails unless it’s at the most obnoxious time or place imaginable and the right tool is always someplace else. On the bright side, consider yourself fortunate the paracord wasn’t barbed wire turning the mower into the brush timmer from Hell and sliced up a couple of tires before you could get it stopped and the battery didn’t fail at the far side of your property. Been there, done that.

        • My cure for a completely dead battery is a bench power supply with adjustable voltage and current settings, so you can crank it up to 15.5v and desulfate a dead battery and monitor the current draw and adjust until ‘well done’.

    • If old style lead acid get a good desulfinator attach and leave attached and running for 2 to 4 months. Brought back a size 27 sulfinated dead battery which now tests out at close to 90% capacity and holds a charge like it was did when nearly new.

    The people who support Biden overlook his brain slip just as the people who support Trump overlook his brain beginning to slip.

    In either case there really is no choice. Trump has been the primary runner since 2015. That’s over 10% of an average lifespan. (Biden from 2015 as well but Biden paused because of “Beau” Biden’s death.)

    I’m on record as stating Trump won’t win 2024. So his blocking a legitimate Republican contender spent another 5% of an average lifespan while we wait for 2028. So will we have another 4 years of Trump politicking from the sidelines waiting for the 2028 run? He’ll lose then and that comes to 20%.

      take that one step further.. add a little cream to it leave out the mayo.. and blend it up.. * you can use broth to) add a half cup of powdered milk.. and stuff it in casings you now have bullshit hot dogs.. ..

  8. George, I didn’t know about chargers that wouldn’t charge from dead-dead. Took the charger back to the store and they explained to me that it wouldn’t charge a completely dead battery. Took the dead battery out of the truck (it was in the garage), hooked it up to another battery in another truck and let it trickled charge for an hour. When I connected the charger there was enough charge that the charger would work.

    • I’ve zapped totally dead and uncooperative batteries with a linear variable voltage power supply, set for maybe 40 volts at a couple of amps, to get its attention, and then put it on an Official Battery Charger — and let it do its thing.

      Worked.

  10. OK.., I’ll admit it. I hate to lose. Especially at something that I consider myself pretty decent at. Doesn’t set well with me. But I lost.
    I had to check., I have not lost a pistol competition in 26 years., until this weekend., and I lost to an 20-something, anorexic looking four eyed noob Boise-Boy. 10 points on speed., ok I’m old – he’s young., I’ll give him that.., but five points on accuracy !? No way. Foul ! Someone throw a red flag. No one has ever beaten me on accuracy.., well, except him.
    We shook hands and I checked out his pistol., a fully comped, 1911 38 super race gun. Very nice pistol. “This was a great competition, thanks for coming. Worth the trip.” [ I was shooting my heavily customized EDC 1911 45 acp.]

  11. Let’s be honest here. I am no guru – genius where it comes to pistol [ or rifle ] shooting. It’s an eye-hand coordination / mind “thingie” that I happen to discover early [ sniper school, in Vietnam.] and have practiced, learned and honed for over 56 years now. An awful lot of lead “down range”. It has been one of my “mental escapes” for a long time.

I shopped garage sales and flea markets to get a manual bulk charger that doesn’t have forced battery obsolescence decision making code embedded within.

  14. Bitcoin is down sharply – down around $3,900., sitting right at $60k.
    Wish I could figure out a trade strategy for it. My paper trading is at only 50%. Win/Loss puts me at near even money.., so, at the moment – not worth the angst.

    • 50% retracement back to it’s break out point last Sept takes it down to 48 – 49 or so (eyeballing chart only). In my experience from trading years ago VOLATILE type instruments seemed to LOVE that 50% retracement rule. (as well as Gap Filling rule). If nothing else Bitcoin IS a VOLATILE type instrument.

      Going that low would HAMMER all the Bitcoin fanatic speculators since many are LEVERAGED!, and would get the leverage out of the product. If you believe in Bitcoin for the long term that is an entry point to consider … assuming the financial system stays up and running during whatever it is that is coming at us like a freight train.

    • Very interesting and saved for later. As far as charging a truly dead battery, I prefer a brute force approach with a large transformer and rectifier driven by a variac. I can raise the voltage enough to start charging and lower it after a bit to keep the amps in check. Leave it on for at least 24 hours, wait an hour and load test. Depending on the use and the results, it either goes into service, gets experimented with, or gets scrapped.

    • Having suffered the indignity of many dozens of drug screens (the most I did in one year was five), I would think that anyone who has the sort of classified access at the WH level would have had at least one routine drug screen. I wouldn’t require the hair sample test. I have had colleagues who shaved their heads to avoid that one.
      As for the cognitive test, I think both candidates and their most rabid supporters should get one.
      Come to think of it, a rabies test and vaccination for the WH press Corp would be fun.

    • TSC definitely seems overpriced. They do have a few specialty items that I can get without ordering online that I can’t get elsewhere, but very few. I only shopped there once last year. Harbor Fright has much cheaper equivalent tools. Probably the only bargain at TSC is the bulk pricing on nuts, bolts, and washers.

    dandelion oil.. ( I put in one or two ounces..

    take one cup of magnesium flakes..

  26. “mowing away Sunday”

    I have a small lot compared and use a push mower. Last week the my mower started acting wonky – hard to start/revving up and down.

    I called the local shop for an assist. The shop owner wanted $50.00 to diagnose the problem. He said most repairs are running $100.00 and his schedule is running about three weeks. He rents lawn mowers, $30.00 for three hours x three weeks. A $240.00 estimate.

    A new comparable LM from Big Orange is $260.00. For $240/$260 I decided to wing it and watched a YT video on how to clean the carburetor and made the attempt. To replace the air filter/flush the oil/carb cleaner was about $20.00.

    I’ll redo the clean in the near future because I wasn’t as thorough as possible. First time and all that. But the LM is running much better and doesn’t rev. LEss time saved $220.00.

    • Have you tried replacing the air filter. My experience with mowers is that a clean air filter fixes most problems like that. For hard starting, a good squirt of Carb Cleaner into the carb usually works for me.

    when they are done.. take the potato out..
    slice an X in it.. and fluff it.. like you would a normal baked potatoe.. pad of butter.. drizzle with chicken gravey..

    now the topping cream cheese shredded chicken chicken graavey.. cheese.. ( I like pepper jack.. you choose its your taste buds that are important..)
    more chicken gravey heat and melt mix together..
    prior take cubbed chicken breasts and coat with egg fine blended up bread crumbs with spagetti seasoning in it.. onion powder garlic powder and parmesean chees.. ( don’t smoke it like the administrations kid perv.. we are going to eat this) you might have to drizzle a little cream in it to make a nice cheesey gravey.. now take the fried up chicken breasts.. and place as many as you can in the backed potato.. drizzle with the chessey chicken gravy more cheese on top wrap it with a piece of bacon and bake until the bacon is done.. in the smoker.. smoked baked chicken stuffed potatoes..

    lay out the noodle on a flat surface.. put sandwich cheese on it.. and plance one sausage on top roll it up put a tooth pick in it.. and fry until sausage is done.. ( you can boil it to.. your choice.. ) pick a sauce you enjoy we use spagetti sauce.. and dip ..

    ever seen the show MASH.. well take your spam.. cut off a regular half inch slice.. set aside.. hollow out the inside so its like a cup.. fill with cheese parmesian cheese.. tooth pick up the top back on tip..     wash your potatoes.. cut a wedge out of the length of the potato… place in a pan cover with boiling water.. heat to boiling.. let cook for four minutes.. ( give or take)
    take them out.. and on a sheet coat with olive oil or butter.. then sprinkle with salt pepper and garlic powder onion powder.. just a sprinkle now..
    place a mozzerella cheese strip on it.. and a slice of bacon on tip.. ( you can use spam to.actually I have use chili hamburger onions.. its up to you.. suasage… ) place in your smoker and smoke it for a half hour.. until done..

  30. Well off for surgery.. hopefully he won’t be a NO call NO show..today…
    How dare them only pay the guy a half mil a year and pay off his school loans.. no rent no utilities no wages for his staff no supplies.no expensive mal practice insurance..etc etc… what an insult to a good young surgeon that can easily make double that.. but have all those other expenses..
