Jumping Job Cuts

“Job Cuts Jump in March 2024 to Highest Total Since January 2023 on Government & Tech” begins the press release:

“U.S.-based employers announced 90,309 cuts in March, up 7% from the 84,638 cuts announced in February, and virtually the same as (+0.7%) the 89,703 cuts announced in the same month last year. It is the highest monthly total since 102,943 cuts occurred in January 2023, according to a report released Thursday from global outplacement and leadership development and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

In the first quarter, companies announced plans to cut 257,254 jobs, down 5% from the 270,416 cuts announced in the same quarter last year. It is up 120% from the 117,163 cuts which occurred in the final quarter of 2023.

This is goosing the Futures because it keeps alive hope the Fed will do some rate cutting this year.  We still think three cuts is way too much, but we don’t engage in the government high-bidder’s game.

International Trade Deficit has Jumped

“The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis announced today that the goods and services deficit was $68.9 billion in February, up $1.3 billion from $67.6 billion in January, revised.

Yes, with news like this on the lamb, we can hardly wait for the other shoe to drop in the Federal employment data tomorrow.  Yes, expect our usual warning that the ONLY number that matters to all is the database entry on number of people (all in) who are working. Not some DEI-oriented or book-talker’s spin on things.  Just how many are working and is that up, or down?

All of which pushes into currency valuations.  Bitcoin was hovering around $66,206 early today, but gold did very well this week.  Gold traded above $2,300 and silver over $27 – as traditional inflation hedges heat up.

Market Hype – It’s Inflation, Silly!

The market should, on average, go up every trading day this year.  It won’t, of course, but the “Big Fix” we’ve been pondering is whether the Stealth Depression can be kept under wraps too much longer.

Remember, it was Joseph Tainter who famously said that civilizations tend to fall apart when the marginal rate of return on additional work falls below zero.  If working harder doesn’t pay off, people give up and toss in the towel.

The Towel Toss can be avoided, however, if there is a large (external) threat to the hive or tribe.  War works, but conventional war doesn’t impact the U.S. much.  For us to be scammed, the “next” policy tool will need to be larger than 9/11 and spill more control around than Covid.

Statistically, next Monday’s eclipse should turn into a nonevent. When it passes – and all the massive crowd preps and National Guard go home, that’s when the Big Hit seems likely.  The April 19-21 date range has been mentioned.

Will War Work?  (WW3)

Sure.  A quick limited nuclear exchange might be just the ticket.  The global cooling that would follow would take the pressure off climate.  The Radiation Fears would allow governments worldwide to “lean on their people” harder and the Powers That Be would have an excuse to confiscate anything not nailed down in the interest of “sharing.”

Which is funny when you think about how their exemplary “walk the talk” has failed.

Nevertheless, the pieces keep sliding around.  Let’s begin with this statement of the obvious: Finland’s membership in NATO would have been impossible without Russia’s aggression in Ukraine – Finnish President (interfax.com.ua).  Oh and FINLAND VOWS 10-YEAR SECURITY PACT WITH UKRAINE Finland’s President: “We are not giving this military support only for Ukraine to defend itself; we are giving it to Ukraine to win this war.”  Gee, bet everyone in Finland is glad to be buying NATO now…

The world mess has resulted in some interesting analysis.  We thought Biden is dreaming it’s like 1918, but Israel is fighting like it’s 1945 (nypost.com) was interesting.

Meanwhile, still pending: Iran promises payback for Israel’s apparent strike that killed top generals. Could happen any time now…mental handholds ready?

Around the Ranch: Home Design and Ops

With the recent changes to our solar arrays, local power generation is back up to respectable levels.  I mean respectable to the point of supporting the whole joint on solar, but only for a brief time during the day. Here’s how our consumption (green) and production (red) worked out on a nice sunny day this week:

This should improve a bit: more panel swaps are coming and when coupled with the longer days of summer, our costs should continue coming down.  Speaking of which, here’s the view of “how fast our money goes out for electricity” chart:

Our total energy cost for the day was $2.38 – which pencils to the low $70s for a monthly bill. My objective is to get under $50 for a monthly bill, but our insulation on the (rebuilt) mobile home won’t likely support that.

If you look at the 5-o’clock hour above, you’ll see the impact of the Ure’s doing an extended warmup on the oven so the pizza steel would be warm enough to do a perfect crust on a shrimp pizza this week.

We devoted a few minutes of discussion at Wine Time Wednesday on how to reduce these numbers.  Cooking differently is the answer.  So, I will be doing some cooking on the outdoor wood stove, and we’ll also get the wood-fired pizza going again. Sun Oven will go back into the mix, too, now that the weather is getting warmer.

Handyman Supplies:  We have been getting very prompt deliveries – and cheap – when using Home Depot for online parts orders.  Things that cost a lot more than the Big Box stores on “the big shopping site” are affordable at HD.  Happened to have a need for 40 3/4-inch SSS PVC T’s. (T-stands for the summer solar angle braces on additional panels.)  Best I could do on the Big Site was mid $30s.  HD came through around $21.

We also happened to notice Home Depot opening four new distribution facilities to fill pro orders | Chain Store Age and thought you’d like to know.

Elements of Home Design: I keep forgetting to mention to my contractor friend Divell that I’ve finally had the big epiphany about what Elaine, and I are after in our home.  “Disney without the branding.”  Or, as I explained on PN Wednesday: We want to live in a home that “transports us.”

That means every room has a vibe to it. If you open your eyes, and just inspect what’s taken in, where does it “put you”?

Off to another action-packed and exciting day. In honor of Baseball Season, I’ll be wolfing down a couple of hotdogs and some chips for breakfast. Elaine made me a “Big 3” Wednesday.  Three eggs, three small Yukon gold’s diced and browned along with 3 slices of ham….yum.  Powered the whole day until dinner. Get your hotdogs while you still can.

That’s always the hardest part of the day, though: “Dinner or Thinner?”

          ya know the people here have been really good to me. the people in jackson hole, well none of them are from jackson hole. what all these billionares that moved to jackson hole did. was bought up all the land. .

          i talked to a fella who grew up in jackson. he went to elementary school there. his whole family grew up there.

          he said its $2800 a month to just live in a trailer court there. i cant even afford to live here. if i was snowboard instructor, i couldnt snowboard here. he said my friends and i used to ride snow mashines up this mountain and snowboard down it when we were teenagers. My Dad took me up there. and his Dad took him up there.

          they put in private ski resort where ya need $10 Million cash deposit, just enter the lodge. i need 10 million dollars now to take my kids sledding where my Dads Dad took Him and He took me.

          i wrote the rancher and his wife a big letter. telling them the scoop on the future. i sat on it for a day and was going to give it to them right before i left.

          then i thought. why??? why do that. they are so happy and free. why not just let them be that. why dont i just go do what i want.

          so i decided not to give them the letter. its all heard and seen about the future. about yellowstone, earthquakes, finding a pokimon card with a dinosaur on it, with a rain of meteors in the sky, volcanos erupting in background, and the moon was shattered into pieces

          what i been told and what i know. i ripped the letter up and threw it in the garbage. i hugged them and told them i loved them. im loading my shit up and getting on the road.

          if the world ends, i hope im on the beach, smoking a cigerette, drinking a cup of coffee and as the 1000 foot tidal wave aproaches, i will be laughing my ass off at the absurdity of it all.

          im going to go live my life. for as long as i am able.

        • its been a trek. i spent one year in the desert with the super wealthy. i spent one year on the beach, going to a thousand shows and met almost anyone who is anyone from paul mccartny to elon musk. havnt talked to elon in a while. i have him on mute. hahaha.           all different people, from all walks of life, differnt cultures, differnt economic status, different careers, from the poorest to the wealthiest. i have sat with men who were grateful to God while in prison as a guest on a christian ministry group and ive sat in multi million dollar mansions and listened to super rich whine about how life sucks and is depressing.
          i slept under red wood trees and the stars while in the grand canyon and the arorah borialus.

          spent all 4 seasons in different enviroments, altitudes, humidity levels etc. etc.

          seen moose, ducks, dogs, wolves, bear, mountain lions, bunnies, cows, giant herds of elk, antilope, caught big king salmon, bass, cat fish, walleye, blue gill and even ate frog legs.

          its been quite the trip the last 4 years. quite the adventure.

          its time to stay put, grow some roots, find a woman and settle down in one place for a long while.

          and that is where im going now. to live the good life, and you know own a couch and a bed, and a tv and pots and pans. lol

          not live entirely out of 2 suit cases. have like shoe bin and shit like that. hahaa.

          like normal people.

          i will tell ya. the last 3 days on the mountain i didnt wanna be here. i didnt wanna come back and finish it. but i did anyway. to the minute.

          i crossed the finish line. 4 years living entirely by faith, owning nothing, holding on to nothing, giving everything. and being of service to everyone. going wherever the spirit lead me.

          it has not even remotely been easy. its been fun, lonely, exhausting, hilarios at times, but very rewarding. very rewarding.
          its been wonderful. truly.

          not sure what is next for me. but im sure…. its good.

      • I read the Deagel report many years ago and looked into it as best I could. My gut tells me that it’s intended. I continue to watch for events leading to the potential population reduction across the “western” nations. I’m convinced that it’s engineered, and depends on the reality that we are an inflexible society living beyond our means, with no redundancy for essential items in our lives. If the currency failed, how would we trade? If the electricity failed, most people in these nations would have no idea what to do, especially lacking media to tell us. I have a good friend that won’t even check the oil in her car between oil changes and has zero in the way of reserve food, lighting or energy. She insists on living that way! Is this normal? If so, only a remnant can survive the slightest change in lifestyle or earthly reality! Notably, in the field of “first aid” or even “first responder”, almost no literature exists on “When There Will Never Again Be A Doctor Or Dentist”!

        It’s sad beyond belief, yet we have to accept
        for now that many cannot be saved, even from themselves.

    Here in SE Pennsyltucky – we be sitting 100 miles from NJ shoreline, you do know whats sitting on ocean floor just of the coast of NJ ?, and are presactly 530 feet above sea level.
    This pencils out to Beachfront property in near future, location location location! Low lying areas like DC, NJ, NYC, I would imagine will be up to there eyeballs in radioactively hot water. One wonders how long before wave action washes away residual radiation from the new beach fronts in SE Pennsyltucky.
    Can you imagine the BCN living in one those coastal elite enclaves alongside ultra libs and progs ? Just boggles my mind, and leads me to think I will need to eradicate as many ultra libs and progs as possible during the troubles/darkness period coming up.

  6. Speaking of the Depression I’m starting to line-up an RE agent to unload the house. They asked why I want sell… So I told them the economy getting ready to collapse. Hahahaha…. But then I’ll have a sack of cash to worry about in Scam Nation. Sigh.

    The basement repair I made didn’t hold so I’ve got a company coming out to fix the leak/crack Monday for $525.00. I’ll be listing May 1st which should get me out at the beginning of the 55 day crash window still to come.

  7. One restaurant in California was the local epicenter for protests for the $20 minimum wage. The employees marched, sang catchy songs, blocked customers, carried signs and demanded a living wage – for flipping burgers.
    The $20 minimum wage went into effect on April 1st.
    Yesterday morning the gang of idiots showed up for work and discovered that the fast-food restaurant had permanently closed overnight.
    All eighteen workers are now unemployed.
    How’s that ‘living wage’ working out for ya now?

    No ‘official’ numbers are in yet – but one restaurant supply corporation has been keeping a tally. So far – they have seen roughly 20% of restaurant workers fired.., and at least 65% of all workers have had their hours drastically reduced., taking them below 12 hours a week. And nearly 6% of restaurants close.
    They believe many more will close-up shop as customers can’t afford the much higher prices that are going into effect to cover the sudden rise in employee costs.
    They estimate that when the dust settles, fast food will cost nearly two, to two and half times more than it will cost a customer to buy at a grocery store., and with the highest unemployment in the country, that’s a lot of customers.
    .
    ., and I wonder, just how much tax revenue will California loose with so many restaurant workers now unemployed, unemployed now going for state assistance, businesses losing sales revenue and businesses closing their doors ?
    – But what do they care. California is already $69 billion in the red – what’s a few billion more gonna hurt ?

    • Actually just read a report early in the week that the state budget deficit is actually closer to $200 billion versus the widely reported $70+- billion.

      A few years back during the last recession I was looking at California’s budgeting problems and at that time about 50% (seem to recall actually 55%) of California’s Income Tax came from Capital Gains taxes. When things are cooking on the High Tech startup front and many people are getting stock options that the New York boys then create a market for that is easy money to collect. When the New Issue stuff comes grinding to a halt
      AND the previous high flying but cash flow negative companies stock comes crashing down those Capital Gains taxes come crashing down too. (and Califonria’s Income Tax revenues shrink big time)

      Too add more pain to the upcoming California government revenue problems between the state and localities the overall government debt for California is now $1 Trillion PLUS.

      As NEW poor immigrants are coming in daily working middle class people are fleeing the state in droves. Net outmigration of the middle class is becoming a real issue for California, something that is probably not going to reverse anytime soon with their high tax rates and exceptionally high housing costs.

      That doesn’t work.

      If you have a store that’s open 24/7 you have 168 hours to fill, and you can’t get by with less than $3360 per job, per week (at $20/hr.) It doesn’t matter if you have 4x42hr employees or 16×10.5hr employees. You still have to fill that hole in your schedule.

      Your options are:

      Find a way for employees to do more than one job, then fire the (now) excess employees

      Move employees from hourly to salaried and cut benefits

      Shift employment to outside your doors (and fire the now-excess employees)

      Automate

      As an experiment, Wendy’s automated 3000 of its restaurants, about nine years ago. I didn’t bother to read the long-term followup but assumed it was successful on some level, since McDonald’s started automating restaurants about five years ago.

      The law went into effect on Monday. Pizza Hut fired 19,200 drivers (IOW ALL of them) on Monday afternoon. If you want The Hut ringin’ your chimes in Westwood, your deliveryman is going to be Uber Liftin’ a Doordash, and your delivery fee just went up seven dollars, not counting tip…

      The first automated McD’s I was in had a salaried “shift lead” who took money or plastic, then passed out food. Every line in the store was automated and robotized. The lead was the only human in the store.

      As for getting employees to do more than one job — rotsa ruck. The vast majority in entry positions aren’t capable of doing one job correctly or efficiently, and many can’t even show up on time (if, at all…)

      I spent most of the day listening to Road Dog Trucking. The Administration is doing some really bad things to OTR truckers and their trucks. They are apparently structuring the regs in such a manner that a new Prez can’t come in and undo said regs. They spent a lot of time discussing Cali, because the State is going to have such a shortfall they will not be able to repair or replace any of their crumbling infrastructure. One of the ‘cussers suggested that the State would need to raise electricity rates by ~$3500 per month and tax the shit out of everyone who was producing their own, just to do roads & sewers.

      • The economist on Road Dog estimated Cali would be a trillion dollars underwater by the end of 2026…

      Businesses have no “business” playing politics. Is McDonalds so much bigger than Budweiser that it can’t learn the lesson without being punished?       So one of my new water alarms started going off on Tuesday, out of the blue. Run downstairs into finished Basement, and hear that it is the alarm on floor next to bar sink?!? WTF over?
      No one had been using sink, and pump sink empties into has its screen cleaned every 3 months (preventative maint.) Turned out OG batteries were run down, replaced and “all good”.
      Next day – yesterday, water alarm starts going off in basement, I boogie on down and hear that it is alarm in utility closet where water heater, floor pump and electric panels are located, SE corner of house. I have 3 Dali lithographs and prints hanging in that closet along with some artful lizards on walls and ceiling..my “surreal closet”
      Alarm saved the day ! Hydraulic pressure had built up enough to start water seeping up from ground into basement. I threw down some “doggie towels” and turn on the dehumidifier. Crisis averted, will be CLEARING a wider and deeper exit for downspout & buried drain pipe today..making for faster easier flow of water off of my roof/downspouts and away form foundation.

      Clearing the outflows has now become a bi-annual maintenance event..reminding me of that old saying the 7 P’s..Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

    When you tell Google to close the ad because it obscures content they say “sure” and close it but leave the text box where it was open still obscuring the entire page.
