Surveillance and Tracking
Our website advertisers may install short-term tracking as part of measuring our audience response to various advertising campaigns. There are several ways you may opt out of such programs, but first a general discussion of tracking and why it's done.
UrbanSurvival, IndependenceJournal/RuralPioneers do not charge vistors for the use of the sites. Since we are not millionaires, volunteering for 70-hours a week and continuing to eat just aren't in the cards. So we sell ads.
Advertisers track response rates using a variety of means. Some use simple session-length cookies while others use more advanced techniques such as s short snips of Java code to see where ad site visitors are coming from - and more importantly - who's buying.
Since most of our efforts are advertiser supported, we have to go along with such requirements, although we make an effort to keep the tracking to a minimum, but in the end we do not control who tracks what on the internet.
Some services we use, such as Facebook, also install tracking cookies in order to see where traffic is coming from, and so forth.
There are a number of ways that a typical home user can reduce the odds of being tracked.
According to our hosting service, www.emwd.com, probably the simplest way is to use the Google Chrome browser, which you can download free from Google's site, and run it in the incognito mode.
The second choice is to use an open source product like Firefox which has a very large and highly aware user community. If you use Firefox, we suggest you install their Lightbeam add-on which will reveal what advertising (and other) tracking services are being used.
There's a growing feeling that Microsoft products among the least desirable browsing options. However, even here, there are ways to reduce your "footprint" including a thorough read of Microsoft setting options.
The bottom line is we're not installing cookies for anything other than ad tracking and if you find otherwise, we'd sure appreciate a note with details.
No Compensation for Emails or Ideas
All emails sent to email@example.com and/or firstname.lastname@example.org as well as those communicated telephonically, electronically, or by other means become, upon receipt, fair use for discussion of the wide range of topics covered by this site.
If a person doesn't not wish material used, don't send it!
Look: I'm a writer, for God's sake, and if you share an idea with me - and for the sake of clarity I choose to use a quote (of any size) that does not constitute any contract or liability for payment upon use of said ideas, quotes, or concepts.
Further, none will be paid under any circumstances.
When references to specific sends of emails are used, they are always handled in a way which reduces the odds of specific user identification to near zero.
Don't send emails and claim damages. I will have you reading this notice in any court proceding and we'll start with you speaking in a very loud voice:
"I am a leach and a pox upon the legal system because I am intellectually dishonest and claim rigthts to ideas which were usually not my original thoughts in the first place. I am attempting to victimize the UrbanSurvival website and its sponsor as I am a worthless piece of shit human who can't make their way through other than larcenous litigation."
Yep, that'd about cover it. Except for discovery which will generally prove prior art and then a treble damages harrassment suit in return....yes, we can play the game of my lawyer's a bigger jerk than yours is...but you don't want my lawyer's bills on top of damages, now, do you?
Better: We all share ideas in a nice colleagial way, I aggregate, present, comment and no personally identifiable info...seems reasonable enough, doesn't it? So it's pre factum your read this part and agree...because if you read this website you likely have a brain which in and of itself is an unusual developpment these days...

Additional Disclaimer for Regular Folks
You need to read this part
Only a weak-willed sissy (or a lawyer - and a slimy one at that) would ever really read a disclaimer. By reading this you are admitting that you are not in charge of your personal life, that you have no self confidence and can not be trusted to make your own intelligent decisions. Is that what you really want? Do you want your friends to know what a flake you are? Do you want the whole world to know that if something goes wrong - rather than fixing it - you'll run simpering to a shyster to make it right.
Any idiot should know that the internet is a wild West kind of place and that when you visit an internet site, you take your chances.
Come on, grow up!
I am not offering you financial personal financial advice. Sure the sky is falling. This site writes about it. If you wanna duck, that's dandy. If you don't, well that's your business. If you want to play in the middle of the freeway, that's your business, too.
This site is about what I am doing about my economic future and I share my views along the way. You're welcome to enjoy the site, but reading it means you agree not to sue me. If you have a different opinion, go break down and buy a copy of Front Page or set up a WordPress site and start writing, champ.
You know what is sick? There is a whole world of lawyers out there want will support you in whatever you do - no matter how stupid. Take this disclaimer. It comes right out and says 'DON'T TRADE ON ANY ADVICE OFFERED ON THIS SITE WITHOUT TALKING TO A PROFESSIONAL FIRST. INVESTING - ESPECIALLY OPTIONS TRADING IS A FINE BUT RISKY (zero-sum, take the money from the new kids kind of) GAME! PEOPLE CAN - AND DO - LOSE THEIR BUTTS ON A REGULAR BASIS. IF YOU WON'T FEEL BAD MAKING A PAYMENT ON SOME LONG ISLAND RICH KID'S MERCEDES, THEN FINE, MAYBE YOU HAVE THE TEMPERAMENT - EVEN SO, GET EXPERT HELP BEFORE YOU INVEST".
WHEW! Having said all that, if you trade (or buy something) based on any information on this page - there is no doubt some slime ball who will promise you the moon if you do something stupid and lose money, you own that decision.
There's no doubt some hack will suggest "recourse". I'm an ex-journalist by trade - even got a bunch of awards tucked away (SDX and so forth in fact) and I try to present facts - within context. I will no doubt someday fail to get it just right. Oh well. Stuff happens. You lose on your trades, I lose on mine. You ain't paying me. (If you would like to pay, of course, send the check along...)
Well fine. This part of the disclaimer is specifically written not for the lawyer-leaches of the world, but for the really good folks who are Mr. & Ms. and Mrs. Joe Six-pack. That's right - the heart and soul of America. The working people who think there are too many promises, too many lawyers, and too much crap in the courts to award you a dime, anyway.
Boy, I could go on disclaiming all day. It's a cleansing exercise for me. But you may have had enough. Picture having to read this in court: Telling the court what an idiot you are for not being responsible for your own actions. Looking for someone else to pin it on. Why, it's amazing you can even put on your own Depend. If you're that kind of person do not use any of our websites. Go do something else with your time.
Now very much more seriously:
This site doesn't offer investment advise. I don't collect "cookies" for nefarious purposes other than advertising tracking, since I don't care where you spend your time on the web. You make your own investment picks, you pay your money and you take your own chances.
If this isn't sufficiently clear to you, again please click away to some other place on the web right now and never visit here again. You'll be happy in your small world, and the rest of us can go build a better future for our kids and grandkids.
