Ure’s Minimum Gets Traction

OK, science isn’t ready to admit to Ure’s Minimum yet, but the idea that the Sun is really the cause of global warming surely seems to at least having a chance of surfacing now that headlines are about like “Scientists Baffled by Lack of Sunspots” and “Strange Doings On the Sun…” This latter one is a milestone of sorts, since it appears in the Wall Street Journal. And that is important because (a hush falls over the assembled multitude) there IS a huge economic angle here. Not only was this an exceptionally quiet (verging on non-existent) hurricane year, but the dramatic heat gradients in the atmosphere when you go from building/rising Sun outputs to talking off the edge of a cliff…well, that powers storms. Like the one this week in the Philippines. And, speaking of which, it is still going on, heading into Southeast Asia now.

Market Flirts w/Crash, Moving Averages Warn, Ure Does Kid’s Book?

TL;DR:  Our “big rally” came by early in the Thursday session and promptly left town. Now our Fractalist pal warns of worse while moving averages blink. In denial, I consider writing a children’s book. But even that’s…well…You’ll see. Betting on “The Expected Future” – False Top?

Seems to us like a good discussion today would revolve around the three flavors of Future that are seen laying out before us. First comes the Very-Near Future.  Like the rest of today and into the early weekend. Intermediate-Future, from 2 or 3 days out and going into the New Year. Then most perplexing of all … Read More

Future Redrawn – Synthetic Growth

We had a very good day in the market Monday.  While I’ll admit to the error of cowardice (not being short over the weekend) the fact is, the “second bite of the apple in the afternoon into the close was a tasty bite. So good that I let it ride overnight.  Because I figured the … Read More

ShopTalk Sunday: Electroculture Experiments Begin!

Awe crap! I don’t need another hobby, really, do I?  Unfortunately, this one just sort of sneaked up on me when my attention was diverted elsewhere. “What is Electroculture?” The best “quick read in” is my friend Robert A. Nelson’s RexResearch site summary and overview paper here: Electro-Culture: Stimulation of plant growth with electricity, magnetism, … Read More

Market Telegraphing Future?

This being Adolph Hitler’s birthday, we have a natural inclination to be especially on guard against evil and its followers this week. And although we still h0ld that events which [MIGHT] lead to WW III will not happen until Orthodox Easter (May 2), what concerns us now is the degree of coming ripples in the … Read More

Future on Rails – Double-Down on Warming?

The Future is sometimes terribly easy to see.  But, when you look at it square-on, it can be really ugly.  As a result, faced with a declining set of prospects of achieve “health, wealth, and happiness” people turn their faces.  Averting their gaze is what America is doing a  lot of right now. Climate: A More Objective Measure?

It has been almost 10-years since we heard about Climategate.  That was the story of the jiggered-data that went into the global warning data tossed around in 2009 (November) at Copenhagen. As Wikipedia sums it: “The Climatic Research Unit email controversy (also known as “Climategate“) began in November 2009 with the hacking of a server … Read More

What Kind of Christmas? 3 Futures Emerge

Three very different pictures of the future are emerging at what we think of as the “financial sports book.”  And two of the three views are driven by some basic Elliott-wave thinking. The first future is the one that should near completion in coming days or weeks.  That’s the future where the big Wave 1 … Read More

Auto Sales Collapse; Crooked Minimum Wages

No, we’re not talking about Florence here, when we talk about the Big Blow-Over.  No, we’re pondering if and when the economy which has been in a massive recovery since 2009 will finally hit its zenith and will begin the next cyclical decline. Thing is – and I’ve mentioned this to your before – there … Read More

Coping: Adventures in Publishing

Lots of people harbor the dream of writing a good adventure novel, but few get around to it. There is also a saying (though I can’t cite the source at this hour) which says everyone who has lived a worthwhile life has a good story or two inside them. It’s generally thought to be a function of how many places you’ve been, what you’ve seen and done in life, and how well you can blend it into “scenes from a movie” and then capture that to paper.

Coping: Scanning the Alt. Futures

Somewhere along the line, it may have occurred to you to ask”Why is this Ure fellow so wrapped up in research related to longwave economics?” I hope you won’t be too disappointed: For me it’s all about being prepared for the future. As I have said uncountable times, there are two ways to win in Life. You can play for maximum gains (in which case I assure you I would be stinkin’ rich by now) OR you can play for minimum loss, in which case you find me with a lone gold coin, surrounded by large trees, money in the back, wonderful wife, debt-free, and so forth.
